I find I prefer the more detailed lines when using a harder lead pencil compared to a soft lead and broad, less distinct lines. In October and most of December I was using the softer lead.

Using a photo to draw from has it’s pros and cons… I can take my time… I can turn both the photo and my sketch pad upside down to get a different view which helps a lot in getting the proportions right but the biggest drawback is the lack of conversation. I so enjoy the back and forth easy-going chatting that occurs when I can talk with the person I am drawing. Below is one of my recent drawings using an online image as the “subject”.

]]> This was a fun project from start to finish!  I had been asked to try to repair a damaged religious painting that had a gold leaf background.  I had never worked with this type of paint but I enjoy a good challenge!  (Thank you, Father Matthew, for entrusting me with your painting!).  Once I finished with the repair I was intrigued with how pretty the glossy gold paint looks so I decided to use two small scraps of wood and experiment.  The 1st picture on this page displays the finished paintings.  The glossy finish doesn’t show up too well in my photo though.  The other photos show the various steps I took.  I have a fair sized collection of Field Guides in a variety of subjects, they provide great inspiration.  Pinterest and other searches online are okay, but, in my opinion, NOTHING is as good as a book in hand!

]]> I enjoy purchasing multiple items on deep clearance and thinking of how to create a different “look” for them. The horizontal pieces previously had Thanksgiving themes painted on white backgrounds and the hanging squares had simple “Hello”, etc. sayings.  The examples all needed a coat of primer, two coats of acrylic paint to create the faux wood effect before painting the actual designs.  At the bottom of this page are pictures of the paint I used and how some of the pictures looked before completion.  I used inexpensive acrylics from Walmart.
