Below are my portrait sketches done from “real life”. THANK YOU to all the students who have patiently sat still while I draw their portraits and all who are providing encouragement and helpful critique as I continue to learn!

Apologies for my tardiness with uploading the remaining 4 drawings done in May! I was spending any “free time” in my gardens!

December 2022

I find I prefer the more detailed lines when using a harder lead pencil compared to a soft lead and broad, less distinct lines. In October and most of December I was using the softer lead.

October 2022

Using a photo to draw from has it’s pros and cons… I can take my time… I can turn both the photo and my sketch pad upside down to get a different view which helps a lot in getting the proportions right but the biggest drawback is the lack of conversation. I so enjoy the back and forth easy-going chatting that occurs when I can talk with the person I am drawing. Below is one of my recent drawings using an online image as the “subject”.
